What We Know About the Nara Organics Infant Formula Botulism Outbreak
Three infants in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington were hospitalized with infant botulism after consuming Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula. On June 13, 2026, Nara Organics recalled every lot of its powdered infant formula while the FDA, CDC, and the California Department of Public Health investigate.
All three infants were treated with BabyBIG (Botulism Immune Globulin Intravenous), the specialized antitoxin used for infant botulism. No deaths have been reported. The California Department of Public Health Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Program reported that all three were Clostridium botulinum toxin Type A infections, with illness onset between April and May 2026.
Infant botulism linked to powdered infant formula is extremely rare. This is the second such outbreak the FDA and CDC have investigated in under a year, following the 2025 recall of ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula.
How the Outbreak Was Discovered
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Program (IBTPP) identified three infant botulism cases that shared a common exposure: all three babies had consumed Nara Organics powdered infant formula. On Friday, June 12, 2026, the FDA and CDC contacted Nara Organics, shared what investigators had found, and recommended a recall because of the severity of the illnesses and the epidemiological signal. Nara Organics agreed to recall all of its formula the next day.
Has the Formula Tested Positive for Botulism?
Not yet. As of the June 13, 2026 announcements, Nara Organics infant formula has not tested positive for Clostridium botulinum. The recall was issued out of caution because all three sick infants consumed the same brand of formula. Health officials in two states have collected leftover formula from affected families, and that laboratory testing is underway, with results expected in the coming weeks. The investigation remains open, and the findings may change as testing concludes.
