A new Hepatitis A health alert was issued by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) on June 5, 2020, concerning a Maine restaurant. The alert was issued after an employee at the Sea Salt Lobster Restaurant in 660 Main St, Saco, ME 04072, tested positive for acute hepatitis A while working at the location from May 12 through May 23, 2020. The employee who tested positive for hepatitis A prepared food at the restaurant during the time frame in which he was ill. The name of the employee has not been disclosed by the Maine CDC at this time.
The Maine CDC stated in a news release “An assessment of the employee’s illness determined that restaurant patrons may be at risk for hepatitis A infection.” All patrons who purchased food at the restaurant during the time frame in which the employee was ill and working are being advised to monitor themselves and seek medical attention if they exhibit symptoms of Hepatitis A. According to the Maine CDC, the alert affects all patrons including anyone who may have had take-out, delivery, or curbside pickup of food from the restaurant.
Patrons and employees who were at the restaurant on May 22 and 23 are being advised to get vaccinated by June 6, 2020, due to their exposure to the ill employee. People who are exposed to the Hepatitis A virus have a 14-day window during which prophylaxis is effective. The Sea Salt Lobster Restaurant was closed for in-person dining due to the COVID-19 Pandemic but the exposure was the Hepatitis A virus was still possible, since the restaurant was still allowing the to-go order and take-out.
Hepatitis A is a viral infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV) and results in severe liver disease and sickness. A person usually becomes sick 15 to 50 days post-exposure of food or beverage containing the HAV virus. Symptoms of Hepatitis A normally include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dark urine, and jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes. According to a national hepatitis A lawyer, Ron Simon, Hepatitis A is understood as a self-limited disease with few ongoing symptoms, but the acute stage cannot be underestimated.
