Now: Broddzenatti Holding LLCโ€™s Karawan Tahini Recalled as Salmonella Outbreak Grows

Recalled tahini possibly contaminated with salmonella

Tahini imported from Palestine and distributed out of Jupiter, Florida, has been recalled after two samples tested positive for salmonella. The contaminated tahini, produced by Broddzenatti Holding LLC, has caused illnesses in at least four people to date.

Broddzenatti Holding LLC is recalling retail and bulk Karawan brand tahini that was sold in 16-ounce jars and 39-pound buckets. The tahini was imported from Palestine between December 2018 and January 2019. Karawan brand tahini subject to the recall was distributed in New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Texas. Those distributors then sold the potentially contaminated product to retail stores.

The company initiated the recall after the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene performed tests on samples of Karawan brand tahini and two of those samples returned positive results for the presence of salmonella. Broddzenatti Holding LLC has ceased importing and distributing the product as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducts its investigation into the contamination and illnesses.

Consumers who have Karawan brand tahini in their homes are urged not to use it and to dispose of it properly or return it to the store of purchase. Retail stores distributed the product in 16-ounce plastic jars of tahini that does not require refrigeration and that has an expiration date of two years from the production date.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
