Shenandoah Growers, Inc. Cyclospora Lawyer Update: Basil Imported from Columbia Recalled Due to Cyclospora Risks.

Shenandoah Growers, Inc. issues a voluntary recall on February 8, 2021, affecting approximately 3,240 branded fresh-cut, packaged organic basil. The recall was issued after a potential Cyclospora contamination was discovered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), when some of the product was pulled from the entry in Miami and tested, as a part of a routine check. After being informed of the potential contamination Shenandoah Growers issued a voluntary recall of the potentially contaminated product, as well as notified customers about the recall. No illnesses have been reported as of the date of the recall, thus far.

In the report of the recall, the FDA stated that the contaminated basil used by Shenandoah Growers, Inc. in their products, originated from Colombia and was harvested entirely from the farm Puerto Vallarta Herbs SAS and imported by Vallarta Organics LLC dba Organic Destiny. According to the FDA, the contaminated basil products were packaged at the Indianapolis, Indiana location. The recalled products were distributed to select retail stores between 2/3/2021 to 2/4/2021 in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

The recalled Shenandoah Growers, Inc. products can be distinguished by their specific lot codes PV40515 1034, PV40515 3034, PV40515 4034, and PV40515 3035. Retail locations that received the potentially contaminated products were advised to immediately remove and discard recalled products from all store shelves, distribution, and other inventories to ensure they are no longer available for sale or consumption. Shenandoah Growers stated that no other products are subject to the recall, and the company has no knowledge of any illness reported or related to this product to date.

Cyclospora parasite can cause an infection known as Cyclosporiasis. A person who ingests food contaminated with cyclospora parasite may begin to experience symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, watery diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, body aches and fatigue, within a few days to a week. Ron Simon, a National Cyclospora Lawyer, stated:

โ€œIndividuals with symptoms linked to Cyclospora should contact their healthcare provider for treatment immediately. In many of the recent cases of a large Cyclospora outbreak, the victims have found out their likely diagnosis on television before they presented for a Cyclospora test. Many had been in and out of their physicianโ€™s offices without satisfaction, often with negative stool cultures leaving both the victim and the medical professional wondering about the etiology of the disease.โ€
