Smoked Silver Salmon, packaged and distributed by Smoked Alaska Seafoods, Inc., of Wasilla, Alaska, may cause a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. The company is recalling all jars and cans of the product, packaged in 6.5 ounce containers with the production code of AL81111133 on the bottom of the container. The salmon product may be contaminated with

clostridium botulinum

, which can be life threatening.

Botulism

in the salmon product may not be detectable simply by looking at or smelling the food. However, it can cause severe cases of food poisoning, with symptoms that include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms.

Symptoms generally work from the head to the feet, affecting the head, weakening the neck, shoulders, arms, calves, etc. In addition to these devastating symptoms, the paralysis of breathing muscles can cause death. Unlike other forms of food poisoning, such as

salmonella or E. coli

, botulism cannot be spread from person to person.

Food poisoning from botulism

is always the result of consuming contaminated food.

The potential contamination was found in a review of the thermal processing records that determined the recalled lot did not receive the prescribed thermal process and was therefore underprocessed. Smoked Silver Salmon was sold throughout Alaska but primarily distributed to gift stores in the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas. Consumers should not eat the smoked salmon, regardless of how it smells or looks. Rather, the salmon product should be properly destroyed or returned to the place of purchase.
