What We Know About the Super Greens Salmonella Outbreak
The CDC, FDA, and state health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Newport infections linked to Live It Up Super Greens and other moringa leaf powder supplements. The CDC closed this investigation on March 17, 2026, then reopened it on May 27, 2026 after 22 new illnesses were reported from four additional states. As of May 27, 2026, 119 people across 36 states have been infected, with 32 hospitalizations and no deaths.
The contamination source is moringa leaf powder used as an ingredient in the supplement. Illinois public health officials collected and tested open samples of Live It Up Super Greens powder from a sick person, and whole genome sequencing (WGS) confirmed the powder contained the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium.
A Second Product, a Common Manufacturer
On January 28, 2026, a second product was recalled: Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules (lot #A25G051, exp. 07/2028) manufactured in Houston, Texas. FDA traceback investigation revealed a common manufacturer between Live It Up Super Greens and Why Not Natural products. Both used the same moringa leaf powder supply chain.
Of 79 people interviewed by CDC investigators, 70 (89%) reported consuming a moringa product: 60 consumed Live It Up Super Greens only, 5 consumed Why Not Natural moringa capsules only, 1 consumed both, and 4 consumed TNVitamins moringa capsules only.
TNVitamins and Doctor’s Pride Added
When the investigation reopened, two more brands entered the recall. On May 26, 2026, Total Nutrition Inc. of Deer Park, New York recalled TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa (lots 2507199, 2512-304, and 2793) and Doctor’s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa capsules (lot 2507199), both 10,000 mg / 120-count bottles. Four people interviewed after the reopening reported consuming TNVitamins capsules. On June 2, 2026, Total Nutrition expanded that recall to add lot 2748 (exp. 07/2027) of both the TNVitamins and Doctor’s Pride capsules after a traceability review linked it to originally recalled lot 2507199. All of these products trace back to the same contaminated moringa leaf powder supply chain.
The Recalled Products
Superfoods, Inc. (d/b/a Live It Up) issued a voluntary recall on January 15, 2026, expanded on January 20, 2026, covering:
- Live It Up Super Greens Original (8.5 oz pouch, UPC 860013190804)
- Live It Up Super Greens Original (30 stick packs, UPC 850077468063)
- Live It Up Super Greens Wild Berry (9.49 oz pouch, UPC 860013190811)
- Live It Up Super Greens Wild Berry (30 stick packs, UPC 850077468070)
All lots beginning with the letter “A” (pouches) or the number “3” (stick packs) are affected, with expiration dates from August 2026 through January 2028. The products were sold through the company website (letsliveitup.com), Amazon, and unauthorized third-party sellers on eBay and Walmart.com.
Who Has Been Affected
The outbreak now spans 36 states. Whole genome sequencing shows the bacteria from sick people’s samples are closely related genetically. Most samples have shown no predicted antibiotic resistance, though one sample showed predicted resistance to ampicillin. Standard treatments generally remain effective for this strain. Illness onset dates range from August 22, 2025 through April 26, 2026.
The Moringa Supply Chain Problem
This is one of four separate Salmonella outbreaks linked to moringa products in roughly five months:
- Member’s Mark / Vallon Farm Direct (Salmonella Richmond) — 11 cases from moringa sourced from Jodhpur, India
- Live It Up / Why Not Natural / TNVitamins / Doctor’s Pride (Salmonella Typhimurium & Newport) — now 119 cases across 36 states after the investigation reopened
- Rosabella Moringa Capsules (extensively drug-resistant Salmonella Newport and Kentucky) — 10 cases across 8 states
- MOGO Pure Moringa Oleifera Capsules (Salmonella Typhimurium) — 18 cases in a separate, ongoing investigation
While these outbreaks involve different strains, products, and manufacturers, they highlight a systemic contamination problem in the moringa supplement supply chain.
