SunFed Agrotato Cucumber Salmonella Outbreak
CDC linked 113 Salmonella illnesses and 28 hospitalizations to whole fresh American cucumbers distributed by SunFed Produce and grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico. Cases were reported from 23 states. No deaths were reported.
November 2024 Recall
SunFed recalled cucumbers sold between October 12 and November 26, 2024 after FDA traceback identified Agrotato as the common grower. CDC identified illness sub-clusters at assisted living facilities, school districts, and a restaurant where cucumbers were served.
Of 69 people interviewed, 81% reported eating cucumbers, a rate far above the 50% baseline in CDC’s FoodNet survey.
Cross-Border Traceback
Because cucumbers moved through multiple distributors, FDA traceback focused on the shared Mexican grower rather than a single retail brand. SunFed noted product may have reached states beyond its direct distribution list.
Your Legal Rights
Confirmed Salmonella after eating recalled cucumbers may support claims against importers, distributors, and foodservice operators that continued serving product after illness clusters emerged.
