What We Know About the Metabolic Meals Salmonella Outbreak
CDC linked 21 Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses and 8 hospitalizations in 13 states to home-delivery meals from Metabolic Meals, in an investigation with state health officials and the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). No deaths were reported. Illnesses began on July 24, 2025 and continued through October 3, 2025. CDC declared the outbreak over on November 21, 2025.
A Subscription Meal Service Outbreak
Metabolic Meals is a subscription service that delivers refrigerated prepared meals to customers’ homes. The company recalled select meals delivered the week of July 28, 2025, and CDC says those meals are no longer available for sale.
The Investigation
State and local health officials interviewed 15 sick people, and 13 of them said they’d eaten a Metabolic Meals prepared menu item. Whole genome sequencing showed that Salmonella from sick people’s samples was closely related genetically, which suggested they got sick from the same food. Genetic testing also predicted that Salmonella from all 21 people’s samples resisted nalidixic acid and wasn’t fully susceptible to ciprofloxacin. CDC noted that infections like these may not respond to some commonly recommended antibiotics. The case count grew from 16 illnesses in 10 states at the first announcement to a final 21 illnesses in 13 states.
Why Meal Delivery Outbreaks Are Hard to Track
