What We Know About the Metabolic Meals Salmonella Outbreak
CDC and FDA linked 21 Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses and 8 hospitalizations to subscription home-delivery meals from Metabolic Meals across 13 states. No deaths were reported. Illnesses began on July 24, 2025 and continued through October 3, 2025. CDC declared the outbreak over on November 21, 2025.
A Subscription Meal Service Outbreak
Metabolic Meals is a subscription home-delivery service that ships refrigerated prepared meals to customers nationwide. The home-delivery model meant that contaminated meals reached 13 states quickly, even though they came from a single production source. CDC interviewed sick people who reported eating Metabolic Meals delivered the week of July 28, 2025. The company removed those meals from delivery once the link was identified.
The Investigation
CDC tracked this outbreak as homedeliverymeals-09-25. Whole genome sequencing matched the Salmonella Enteritidis strain across patients in multiple states, supporting the conclusion that all illnesses came from a common source. By the end of the investigation, the case count had grown from the initial 16 illnesses across 10 states to a final 21 illnesses across 13 states.
Why Meal Delivery Outbreaks Are Hard to Track
Home-delivery meal subscriptions create unique challenges for outbreak investigators. Unlike a restaurant outbreak where sick people share a location and timeframe, subscription customers are scattered geographically, eat the meals at home, and may not remember exactly which meal they ate when symptoms appeared. The combination of delivery records (kept by the company), credit card statements (kept by the customer), and stool cultures positive for the outbreak strain is what allowed investigators to confirm the link.
Your Legal Rights
If you received Metabolic Meals delivered the week of July 28, 2025 and developed laboratory-confirmed Salmonella Enteritidis infection, you may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, hospitalization costs, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages. Cases involving hospitalization or complications like reactive arthritis carry significant value.
