Nothing was recalled here because the exposure was animal contact, not a food product. Maricopa County closed its investigation on January 6, 2026 and confirmed the fair's petting zoo as the source, so there is no ongoing risk from the 2025 fair.

Symptoms to Watch

E. coli Symptoms

Severe Stomach Cramps

Sudden, intense abdominal pain, often the first thing a parent notices after a fair or farm visit

Diarrhea, Often Bloody

CDC says most people with E. coli infection have diarrhea that can be bloody or watery, with cramps that can be severe

Vomiting and Low Fever

CDC says some people also have vomiting or a low fever, and young children can get dehydrated fast

Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)

A serious kidney complication of STEC infection that can develop as diarrhea improves. It is most common in children younger than 5

Get medical care now if you have bloody diarrhea or severe stomach cramps, and watch closely for signs of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) such as reduced urination, pale skin, or unusual bruising. HUS is a life-threatening kidney complication that can appear about a week after diarrhea starts, even as it improves, and is most dangerous for young children.

Next Steps

What To Do Now

1

If your child touched animals at the 2025 Arizona State Fair and got sick afterward, tell their doctor about the animal contact and ask whether stool testing for Shiga toxin-producing E. coli is needed

2

If your child was diagnosed with HUS or had kidney trouble, ask the treating doctor what follow-up is appropriate and keep every follow-up record

3

Ask the hospital or clinic for copies of every lab result, especially the stool culture and any Shiga toxin test

4

Report the illness to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health so it is on the record even though the investigation has closed

5

Save fair tickets, parking receipts, card statements, and dated photos or posts that show you were there and which animals your child touched

6

Write down what you remember about hand-washing, whether soap and water were available, and whether anyone told you to wash before eating

Investigators with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health and the Arizona Department of Health Services identified the Arizona State Fair petting zoo as the source, and the county confirmed it when it closed the investigation on January 6, 2026. Genetic testing sealed the link, with records showing at least 11 patient samples matched a single strain. E. coli lives in the gut of healthy farm animals, so it spreads at petting zoos when a child touches an animal or a fence or a gate and then touches their mouth or eats before washing their hands.
