Boar’s Head is a deli meat and cheese manufacturer that distributes its products to delis and grocery stores across the United States. In 2024, its deli meats were at the center of one of the deadliest listeriosis outbreaks in the United States in more than a decade.
The 2024 Listeria Outbreak
Federal health officials linked the outbreak to Listeria monocytogenes in Boar’s Head liverwurst and other deli meats. By the time the CDC declared the outbreak over on November 21, 2024, 61 people across 19 states had been infected, 60 had been hospitalized, and 10 had died. Investigators traced the contamination to the company’s plant in Jarratt, Virginia, where a liverwurst sample tested positive for the outbreak strain.
Recall and Plant Closure
Boar’s Head recalled its liverwurst in July 2024 and then expanded the recall to about 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat deli meat and poultry made at the Jarratt facility. In September 2024, the company announced it would indefinitely close that plant and stop making liverwurst. A federal review later documented conditions at the facility that raised serious food safety concerns.
