Thus far no other distributors have been linked to the growing outbreak, a recall has been issued on red, yellow, white, and sweet onions as well as a variety of other onions due to the potential for cross-contamination. No Canadian grown onions have been linked to an outbreak at this time.
Health officials in both the U.S. and Canada have continued to advise all consumers to dispose of any onion products that may have been distributed by Thomson International. Although the recall is still inaction health officials believe that the number of cases may continue to grow in the coming weeks as more people continue to seek out medical attention. A health notice was issued by the Public Health Agency of Canada advising all consumers to practice caution when eating prepared foods that are made with onions, such as salads, sandwiches, wraps, dips, salsas, or guacamole.
People who have eaten onions and are exhibiting symptoms such as headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal and stomach cramps, and diarrhea should consider consulting a medical health care professional as soon as possible as they are symptoms of salmonella. Salmonella infects people of all age groups and backgrounds. Infants, the elderly, and people who have compromised immune systems are at greater risk of severe or complicated disease.
Ron Simon, a national Salmonella Lawyer, stated:
“Although direct person-to-person transmission of the infection is theoretically possible, more than 95% of Salmonella infections are transmitted by the consumption of foods contaminated with the bacteria… Salmonella bacteria are usually transmitted to humans who unknowingly consume food contaminated with the feces.”
