Prairie Farms Supplement Shake Listeria Outbreak
FDA and CDC linked 42 Listeria illnesses, 41 hospitalizations, and 14 deaths to Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial frozen supplemental shakes manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Cases were reported from 21 states.
Healthcare Setting Outbreak
Many victims were nursing home and long-term care residents or recently hospitalized patients already in fragile health. Lyons Magnus recalled 4 oz. shake cartons with best-by dates from February 21, 2025 through February 21, 2026 after Prairie Farms initiated the underlying recall.
CDC looked into this Listeria strain in 2018, 2021, and 2023 but couldn’t tie it to a specific food. CDC reopened the investigation in October 2024 after six new illnesses were reported. FDA’s review of long-term care food records showed the shakes were a common food, and in February 2025 the outbreak strain turned up in environmental samples from the Prairie Farms plant. Illnesses started between August 17, 2018, and March 13, 2025.
Why Listeria Hit So Hard Here
Listeria grows at refrigerator temperatures and can persist on equipment that isn’t fully sanitized. For elderly and immunocompromised patients, listeriosis carries a high risk of bloodstream infection, meningitis, and death.
Your Legal Rights
Families of deceased residents and hospitalized patients may pursue claims against manufacturers, distributors, and facilities that continued serving recalled shakes.
