Vermont health officials linked 14 illnesses in Vermont to the Salmonella Enteritidis strain found in eggs from Leaping Bear Farm in Reading. Officials also reported genetically linked cases in other states, without publishing their number or locations. The 14 shown on this page is a Vermont count, not a multistate total.
Which Eggs Were Recalled?
The farm voluntarily recalled all eggs in cartons dated June 1 through September 5, 2026. The cartons carry the Leaping Bear Farm logo and the wording Grade A Pasture Raised Organic Eggs. The notice doesn’t identify the printed date as a pack date or a sell-by date.
Eggs were sold at farmers markets, farm stands, stores, and The Putney Diner in Windsor and Windham counties. The recalled-products section lists all 18 outlets from the state notice. If you ate eggs at the diner or someone brought eggs home for you, you may never have seen their packaging.
What the Investigation Established
Vermont officials found Salmonella Enteritidis in the eggs and in environmental samples at the farm. Lab confirmation came on September 10, and the recall was announced September 11. The farm agreed to stop selling or distributing chicken eggs until the agriculture agency determines the strain is no longer a public-health threat.
Officials haven’t published illness-onset dates, hospitalizations, or deaths. No agency has announced that the investigation is over.
