What We Know About the Super Greens Salmonella Outbreak
CDC declared this Salmonella outbreak over on July 22, 2026, and FDA closed its investigation the same day. The final count was 131 people infected across 38 states, 36 of them hospitalized, and no deaths. Investigators linked illnesses to moringa leaf powder products sold under the Live It Up, Why Not Natural, TNVitamins, and Doctor’s Pride brands. Before closing the case, CDC added Salmonella Richmond as a third serotype alongside Typhimurium and Newport. CDC had closed the investigation once already, on March 17, 2026, and reopened it on May 27, 2026 after new illnesses appeared. FDA has since increased screening of imported moringa powder for Salmonella.
State labs found the outbreak strain in the product itself. Illinois and Wisconsin each detected it in opened Live It Up Super Greens samples, and Minnesota detected it in an unopened Live It Up Super Greens sample, meaning the contamination was in the package before anyone at home touched it. FDA separately detected the outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport in two moringa leaf powder ingredient samples and the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium in an opened sample of Why Not Natural capsules.
A Second Product, a Common Manufacturer
On January 28, 2026, a second product was recalled: Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules (lot #A25G051, exp. 07/2028). The recalling firm is Art Monkey LLC dba Why Not Natural of Houston, Texas. That’s the company’s own address, and no agency has said where the capsules were made. What FDA’s traceback investigation did find is a common manufacturer between Live It Up Super Greens and the Why Not Natural capsules, both of them drawing on the same moringa leaf powder supply.
Of 84 people interviewed across the whole outbreak, 74 (88%) reported eating a product containing moringa leaf powder: 63 reported Live It Up Super Greens only, 5 reported Why Not Natural capsules only, 1 reported both, and 5 reported TNVitamins capsules only.
TNVitamins and Doctor’s Pride Added
When the investigation reopened, two more brands entered the recall. On May 26, 2026, Total Nutrition Inc. of Deer Park, New York recalled TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa (lots 2507199, 2512-304, and 2793) and Doctor’s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa capsules (lot 2507199), both 10,000 mg / 120-count bottles. Five of the 84 people interviewed reported TNVitamins moringa capsules and nothing else from the outbreak list. On June 2, 2026, the company added lot 2748 (exp. 07/2027) of both brands, and on June 11, 2026 it added TNVitamins lots 2725 and 2503104 and Doctor’s Pride lot 2725, all expiring 04/2027.
A fourth recall followed on June 26, 2026, covering two different products: TNVitamins 100% Organic Moringa Capsules 1,200 mg (lot 2800, exp. 02/2028) and TNVitamins 100% Organic Moringa Powder (lot 2782, exp. 05/2028). FDA has been clear that the two ingredient samples behind that recall tested positive for Salmonella but did not match an outbreak strain, and no illnesses were attributed to those products. The earlier TNVitamins and Doctor’s Pride capsule recalls were part of the outbreak investigation.
The Recalled Products
Superfoods, Inc. (d/b/a Live It Up) issued a voluntary recall on January 15, 2026, expanded on January 20, 2026, covering:
- Live It Up Super Greens Original (8.5 oz pouch, UPC 860013190804)
- Live It Up Super Greens Original (30 stick packs, UPC 850077468063)
- Live It Up Super Greens Wild Berry (9.49 oz pouch, UPC 860013190811)
- Live It Up Super Greens Wild Berry (30 stick packs, UPC 850077468070)
Every lot is covered. Pouch codes start with the letter “A” and stick pack codes with the number “3.”
Who Has Been Affected
The outbreak reached 38 states, and Wisconsin was hit hardest with 18 cases. Whole genome sequencing showed the bacteria from sick people’s samples were closely related genetically, which is how investigators tied illnesses in different states back to the same powder. CDC found no predicted resistance in bacteria from 128 people’s samples. Three people’s samples were predicted resistant to ampicillin, and one of those was also predicted nonsusceptible to ciprofloxacin. FDA and state partners from Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin collected finished product and ingredient samples from sick people’s homes and from firms in the supply chain. Twelve of those samples tested positive for Salmonella, and 11 carried at least one outbreak strain. Illness onset dates run from August 22, 2025 through June 14, 2026.
The Moringa Supply Chain Problem
CDC counts this as one of four Salmonella outbreaks tied to contaminated moringa products since 2025:
- Member’s Mark / Vallon Farm Direct (Salmonella Richmond), 11 cases from moringa sourced from Jodhpur, India
- Live It Up / Why Not Natural / TNVitamins / Doctor’s Pride (Salmonella Typhimurium, Newport and Richmond), 131 cases across 38 states, closed July 22, 2026
- Rosabella Moringa Capsules (extensively drug-resistant Salmonella Newport and Kentucky), 10 cases across 8 states, investigation closed
- MOGO Pure Moringa Oleifera Capsules (Salmonella Typhimurium), 34 cases across 22 states with 11 hospitalizations, closed July 17, 2026

Ron Simon & Associates Filed the First Lawsuits
Ron Simon & Associates filed the first lawsuit in this outbreak on January 15, 2026, in Kane County, Illinois, on behalf of Wesley Williams. Mr. Williams consumed Live It Up Super Greens in December 2025 and developed Salmonella the day after his first child was born, forcing him to quarantine for over a week to protect his newborn.
A second lawsuit was filed January 28, 2026, in Walworth County, Wisconsin, on behalf of Jay Sperry, who was hospitalized for five days after consuming the product.
