The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an update on the mysterious multi-state Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak on October 14, 2021. This recent update showed an increase in reported cases of salmonella, since the last update the number of people who have become ill due to the salmonella outbreak strain has increased by 173 cases. Thankfully no deaths have yet to be linked to the outbreak but the number of people requiring hospitalization increased by fifty bringing the number up to 116 cases.

According to the CDC, the investigation is still active and the source of the illnesses has yet to be discovered at this time. The illnesses linked to the salmonella outbreak range from the dates May 31, 2021, to September 29, 2021. Although no cases linked to the outbreak have been reported in October as of now, health department officials believe that the number of cases linked to the salmonella outbreak strain will continue to increase as more people seek out medical attention.

State and local officials have continued to interview people diagnosed with the salmonella outbreak strain but no clear sources have been determined. The CDC stated that they will continue to review the data collected from the ill individuals to try to identify the source of the outbreak. At this time the only information disclosed to the public regarding a potential source of the outbreak is the sample taken from a takeout condiment cup containing cilantro and lime. Many of the ill people reported that the condiment container also contained onions, but none were left in the cup when it was tested.

The number of people affected by the mysterious salmonella Oranienburg outbreak is now up to 592 illnesses nationwide. The majority of salmonella illnesses have been reported from Texas (149) and Oklahoma (92). The CDC has advised both consumers and medical health care providers to be vigilant for symptoms of salmonella. Ron Simon, as National Salmonella Lawyer, stated:

“This outbreak is under investigation in numerous states in an effort led by the CDC and FDA, and I believe it is just a matter of time before they identify the product responsible for the outbreak.”
