The source of e. coli contaminated romaine lettuce has not yet been determined by health investigators. However, consumers who have become ill from eating the lettuce are now turning to the restaurants and suppliers involved in serving the romaine lettuce for legal recourse. The latest count of reported illnesses directly related to the e. coli contamination is 172 people across 32 states. At least 75 of those have been hospitalized and one person has died.

Consumers, are now beginning to file lawsuits against restaurants that served the romaine lettuce. Panera Bread was the first incident to be discovered, after a restaurant patron in one of Panera’s New Jersey locations became seriously ill with gastrointestinal issues, including diarrhea and abdominal cramps. That person was one of the worst affected, as she was hospitalized and eventually developed

hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)

, a serious kidney issue.  Later, as the outbreak grew, one California resident died.

The

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

and

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

are continuing to investigate the outbreak, to determine the specific source of the romaine lettuce and the e. coli contamination. The lettuce was grown and distributed from the Yuma, Arizona, area, but further investigation by the CDC and FDA, as well as the discovery demanded by Romaine Lettuce E. coli lawyers in litigation against the vendors and distributors of the tainted e coli Romaine Lettuce, will be needed to pinpoint the exact source in the region.
