Nearly 400 victims of salmonella, in the U.S., and another 114 in Canada, have been linked to red onions sold by Thomson, a California company. The outbreak is quickly becoming the most expansive salmonella outbreak of 2020, says

Simon, adding:

“we have known about the outbreak since early in July, but only found out definitively that the many cases of salmonella Newport identified throughout July were part of a single outbreak linked to one product, the Thomson Red Onions.”

Red onions, like many other types of produce, can easily be infected with salmonella through coming in contact with feces. The feces are the means by which salmonella is passed from one entity to another. Salmonella then grows on the plants and spreads during harvest, packaging, storage and delivery, and if not adequately washed, can contaminate the consumer.

Salmonella Newport

is one of more than 2100 strains of salmonella and is identified every year in modest numbers. By mid-July, it was clear that the number of salmonella Newport cases had clearly exceeded any “normal” occurrence. As such, the local and state agencies,

working with the CDC

, took the next step. In this instance, in addition to being a specific strain (“Newport”), health investigators and epidemiologists identified the specific

PFGE

(like a genetic code) associated with the Red Onion Salmonella Newport outbreak and determined that each of the nearly 400 individuals had been sickened by the same source. Specific food questionnaires were then given to each victim, and a trace-back investigation undertaken (with the

assistance of the FDA

) to determine the source. Initially, investigators were unable to find an obvious source, but as the number of victims continued to climb, they identified onions. From there, they traced the source to a single type, red onions, and from there to a single manufacturer – Thomson.

According to one national food poisoning lawyer, a number of red onion salmonella lawsuits were drafted early this month in anticipation of a determination of the source of the salmonella Newport outbreak. The states hit hardest, for which 34 have identified victims, include Oregon with 71 – California with 49 – nearly a dozen in Illinois and Iowa (2 states already hit hard by a concurrent Cyclospora outbreak in which the cyclospora lawyers at Ron Simon & Associates have filed a number of lawsuits) – Utah has 61 – Wyoming 11 – Montana 33 – and Michigan nearly 2 dozen!
