There have been 20 reported cases of E. coli infections in 6 states (FL, IA, KS, MI, OH and WI) with onset dates reported between July 24, 2022 and September 19, 2022. Of the 14 people with information available, 5 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported at this time. One person has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that can cause kidney failure.

State and local public health officials are interviewing people about the foods they ate in the week before they got sick. Among 18 people interviewed, 15 reported shopping at ALDI stores. Of these 15 ALDI shoppers, 6 reported eating Earth Grown brand frozen falafel products purchased from ALDI in the week before their illness began.
