The Listeria Lawyer Update: CDC Updates on Listeria Outbreak Linked to Deli Meat.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shared information on the mysterious listeria outbreak linked to deli meat on December 4, 2020. In their report, the CDC stated that as of the last update, which was announced in late October one more case was linked to the outbreak. The specific product involved in the outbreak remains a mystery, but all 10 of the individuals affected by the outbreak have admitted to eating deli meat before becoming ill.

With the most recent update to the number of cases linked to the listeria outbreak has risen to 11 reported cases all of which have required hospitalization. Sadly one death linked to the outbreak was reported from Florida in the last update. The states which have reported cases at this time are Massachusetts who reported seven cases and New York with three cases.

The CDC has stated that both State and Local public health officials interviewed the individuals linked to the outbreak and all 10 have reported eating Italian-style deli meats, such as salami, mortadella, and prosciutto. Many of them also purchased prepackaged deli meats and meats sliced at deli counters at various locations. The CDC is still trying to determine the specific type of deli meat or a common supplier linked to the illnesses.

The CDC is advising consumers that even when there are no ongoing outbreaks people should avoid eating deli meats unless heated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot just before serving.

The CDC has announced that more information on the outbreak will be provided as it becomes available and that they will continue to investigate the listeria outbreak. Ron Simon, a National Listeria Lawyer, stated:

“Listeria is killed by pasteurization and cooking; however, in certain ready-to-eat foods such as hot dogs and deli meats, contamination may occur after factory cooking but before packaging.”
