A recall was issued by Lakeside Refrigerated Services, a New Jersey-based company, on June 13, 2020, involving more than 42,000 pounds of ground beef product. The recall was announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) due to the fact that the ground beef products may be potentially contaminated with E.coli O157: H7. The potential E. coli 157: H7 contamination was discovered during routine testing of the ground beef products by the FSIS. As of the day of the recall no reports of illnesses linked to the beef products have announced.

The ground beef products were produced on June 1, 2020, and sold by Lakeside Refrigerated Services under the names Marketside Butcher and Thomas Farms. The products were shipped to local retails locations nationwide. They can be distinguished by their establishment number “EST. 46841”, found inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The FSIS has voiced their concerns that although the recall was announced consumers may still possess the potentially contaminated ground beef products inside their freezer or refrigerators. Consumers who have one of the recalled products are being asked to return it to the place where it was purchased for a full refund. Consumers have been advised to cook ground beef at an appropriate temperature of 160°F before consuming to kill harmful bacteria.

E. coli O157: H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause symptoms such as bloody diarrhea, dehydration, nausea, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. In some severe cases E. coli O157: H7 can develop into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. Ron Simon, a national E. coli lawyer, stated “HUS is itself a complication of E. coli O157: H7 illness, but can easily stem into further health issues. These complications are serious and could, ultimately, be life-altering and life-threatening.”
