Dole Cyclospora Lawyer Update: Fresh Blueberries Recalled Due to Cyclospora Concerns

A recall was announced by the Food and Drug Administration affecting Fresh Blueberries sold the company Dole Diversified North America, Inc. on June 25, 2021. The recall was issued due to the potential contamination of a limited number of cases of Doleโ„ข Fresh Blueberries by Cyclospora parasite. According to FDA, the company Dole Diversified North America, Inc. issued the recall of the potentially contaminated blueberry products voluntarily and is currently working with regulatory officials closely on this incident.

The blueberry products were sold in four different sizes, 18 oz- UPC 0 71430 01154 6, Pint – UPC 0 71430 01151 5, 6 oz – UPC 07143001150 8, and 24 oz – UPC 071430011155 3.

ย According to the company, the contaminated products were distributed to four states in the US, Illinois, Maine, New York, and Wisconsin, as well as two Canadian provinces, Alberta and British Columbia. Thankfully the company which distributed the contaminated products has stated that as of the day of the recall no illnesses have been reported.

The FDA and Dole Diversified North America, Inc. are urging consumers who might have purchased any of the potentially contaminated blueberry products with the matching UPC numbers to return them to the place of purchase. People who might have ingested the contaminated products may begin to experience gastrointestinal issues within a week of consuming the contaminated blueberries. The berries had packed-out dates that ranged from May 28, 2021, to June 9, 2021, which means people who consumed the recalled blueberries may have started to experience symptoms without knowing what might have caused it.ย

Cyclospora parasites can cause Cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection that commonly causes symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, body aches, and fatigue. Cyclsopora has been linked to multiple outbreaks in the past; in the most recent cyclospora outbreak in the summer of 2020 more than 700 people became ill after eating bagged salad products without realizing what was causing their illnesses. Some of the people affected by the outbreak experienced the recurrence of symptoms for over 100 days after eating the bagged salads due to the incubation period of the parasite. Ron Simon, a National Cyclospora Lawyer and lawyer for many of those victims, stated:ย

โ€œIn many of the recent large Cyclospora outbreaks, the victims only found out their diagnosis after hearing reports on television.ย  Before that, their doctors did not order the correct tests to identify this “tropical” parasite. These victims only received the proper diagnosis, and treatment, after they presented for a specific Cyclospora test. Many had been in and out of their physicianโ€™s offices without satisfaction, for weeks and even months, often with negative stool cultures leaving both the victim and the medical professional wondering about the etiology of the disease.โ€
