Hy-Vee Inc. has issued a recall on its 12 oz. Hy-Vee Bagged Garden Salad products sold across its eight-state region. The recall was issued after the salad products were discovered to be potentially linked to a recent multi-state cyclospora outbreak. The outbreak was announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 19, 2020, since the outbreak announcement the number of reported cases has increased to 122, across 7 states. No deaths have been linked to the outbreak at the moment but 19 people have required hospitalization.

The products affected by the recall are all 12 oz. Hy-Vee Bagged Garden Salad, all UPCs, and expirations dates. The salad bag products were distributed to Hy-Vee grocery stores across its eight-state region of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Hy-Vee has stated that no other Hy-Vee food items are impacted by this recall. Customers who purchased this product should discard it or return it to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund.

In the most recent report of the outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that the number of people affected may still increase as many people have not yet been tested. The age range of the positive laboratory tested cases range from 16 to 92 years with a median age of 63 and 45% are female. According to the CDC, they began receiving case on May 11, 2020, with the last reported case so far reported on June 15, 2020.

Cyclospora infects the small intestine and usually causes watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, fatigue, weight-loss, and nausea. Symptoms can begin to take effect from as early as 1 week. According to Ron Simon, a national cyclospora lawyer, “Individuals with symptoms linked to Cyclospora should contact their healthcare provider for treatment immediately. In many of the recent cases of a large Cyclospora outbreak, the victims have found out their likely diagnosis on television before they presented for a Cyclospora test.”
