Hepatitis Lawyer Update: Acute Hepatitis Outbreak Potentially Linked to “Real Water”
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a potential acute non-viral Hepatitis outbreak linked to “Real Water” brand alkaline water. Thus far, the Southern Nevada Health District has announced their ongoing investigation of a number of cases potentially linked to the hepatitis outbreak. Although health department officials have yet to officially link the water products to the outbreak, “Real Water” brand alkaline water seems to be the only common link identified among all of these cases to date. As of the date of the outbreak announcement five cases have been officially reported in Nevada.
In their report of the outbreak, the FDA stated that on March 13 they were alerted to five cases of acute non-viral hepatitis, which can result in acute liver failure. The five cases were reported to the Southern Nevada Health District back in November 2020, at the time that the cases were reported the cause of the illnesses was still unknown. According to the FDA, the five reported cases came from different households and the only common link was the “Real Water” products which they all reported drinking. From the separate household two adults and three children who drank the water reported experiencing other symptoms as well.
The FDA and CDC have begun advising consumers, restaurants, and retailers, to stop selling, drinking, using, and serving “Real Water” brand alkaline water until more is known about the outbreak and its cause. According to the FDA, since the investigation is still in its beginning stages, there may be additional products connected to this outbreak. The FDA has stated that they will continue to update the public as more information is known regarding the outbreak.
Symptoms of all types of Hepatitis normally include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay or gray-colored bowel movements, joint pain, yellow eyes, and jaundice. In more severe cases it can also cause liver failure. Ron Simon, a National Hepatitis Lawyer, stated:
“Many people are diagnosed upon arrival at a hospital because the medical staff can see yellowing eyes or skin. This condition, called jaundice, is associated with a liver that is under attack… A person with acute hepatitis will have extremely elevated liver function numbers.”
