Cyclospora Lawyer Update: The CDC Reports Over 200 Laboratory-Confirmed Cyclospora Cases.
A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced 208 laboratory-confirmed cyclospora cases from the time frame of May to July 2021. The recent announcement stated that according to the investigation thus far all cases were domestically acquired with none of the people affected having any history of international travel during the 14 days before illness onset. No clear source has been disclosed as of yet, but the CDC and public health officials are investigating the sudden peek of cyclospora cases in recent months.
In their report, the CDC stated that as of their last report on June 24, 2021, the number of laboratory-confirmed cyclospora cases has risen by over 200. According to the CDC, the number of cases being reported has not stopped, they are continuing to receive constant reports of individuals being diagnosed with cyclospora. As of July 14th, 2021, the number of cases domestically acquired since the last update is 208 cases that have been reported from twenty-two different states, twenty-one of the reported cases have required hospitalization due to the illness.
In the previous year’s cyclospora cases have peaked in the months of June and July, and many of the cases continue to be reported up until September. In one of the most recent cyclospora outbreaks over 700 cases were linked to bagged salad products sold throughout the US, the outbreak began in May 2020 and continued until September 25th of 2020. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CDC, the number of actual cases was higher than those that were reported during the outbreak but many people who fell ill might have opted out of seeking medical treatment or they might have not been properly tested for the parasite.
A person normally begins to exhibit symptoms of cyclospora within a week of ingesting products contaminated with the parasite. In some cases, an individual can experience symptoms for up to a hundred days with a recurrence of acute symptoms throughout the illness.
