China Buffet Listeria Lawyer Update: 2 Reported Listeriosis Cases Linked to a Minnesota Restaurant.
The restaurant China Buffet in Alexandria, MN, was announced to be linked to two
listeriosis
cases on March 10, 2020. The
Minnesota Department of Health
stated that the reported cases admitted to eating at the restaurant on February 15
th
, 2020, before becoming ill. According to the Health Department, the two affected individuals didn’t begin displaying symptoms of the infection until March 10
th
, after being tested it was discovered that the two infections came from the same genetic strain.
Amy Saupe, an epidemiologist of the MDH, announced that the two reported cases have since recovered. Saupe also stated that after interviewing the two affected individuals and discovering that they both had dined at the China Buffet investigators were sent to the restaurant, they are now tracking invoices to see if they can determine where the listeria contamination might have come from. According to Saupe, due to the amount of the time that has passed since the two cases dined at the restaurant the Health Department may never find the cause of the contamination since the contaminated products might already be gone.
Horizon Public Health inspector, Doug Breitkreutz, stated that since learning about the two listeriosis infections the restaurant has been working alongside Horizon Public Health to disinfect the kitchen. Breitkreutz stated that he has been the inspector for China Buffet for the past 3 years and they have never had any major violation or at least no more than any other restaurant. In their last annual inspection in December 2019 no violations were found. Breitkreutz said this about the restaurant “They’re just as safe a place to eat as any place in town, I just feel so bad about the restaurant. They didn’t do anything wrong. It could happen to anybody.”
Listeriosis is a serious illness caused by
Listeria monocytogenes
bacterium; it can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. In severe cases, it can spread to the nervous system and cause headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur. In the past few months, Listeria has become a hot topic as it’s been linked to the
Almark Eggs outbreak
which took place in late December of 2019 and most recently announced
Enoki Mushrooms outbreak
announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just last week. Both Listeria outbreaks have been linked to multiple deaths caused by the infection.
