B&I Overseas Trading, Inc. Listeria Lawyer Update: Herring in Oil Product Recalled Due to Listeria Concerns.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of herring in oil with the brand name Veladis on December 24, 2020. The voluntary recall was issued due to a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination that seems to have affected approximately 400 units that were sold in the months of November and December of 2020. The company B&I Overseas Trading, Inc. has stated that they are working along with the FDA to investigate the source of the potential Listeria contamination.

The products affected by the recall were sold with the name “Veladis herring in oil with Italian spices” to select International retail stores. According to the recall notice, the retail stores in the United States who received the potentially contaminated products were in the state of Washington. The products were sold in 17.64 ounces (500 gram) plastic packages with a stamp on the top portion of the packages that showed the expiration date of 08/08/2021. At the time of the recall, the only affected products seemed to have a lot number, UPC No: 4823097903896.

The FDA stated in their recall notice that all potentially affected products have been removed from sale at this time. The company B&I Overseas Trading, Inc. has urged all consumers who might have purchased the potentially contaminated products with the affected lot number to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. According to the FDA, the affected lot number has been removed from distribution while the investigation on the source of the contamination continues.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause Listeriosis, a potentially serious and at times fatal infection that has a higher risk of affecting young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Individuals who are affected by a listeria infection may experience high fevers, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Ron Simon, a National Listeria Lawyer, stated:

“Most of the victims who get Listeria will develop gastroenteritis and will recover without seeking medical attention, or if they seek medical attention, will not be tested or provide a stool sample which often misses Listeria in standard stool cultures… Victims who have symptoms such as fever or a stiff neck may consult a physician, and there are options in cases of suspected Listeriosis for blood or spinal fluid test.”
