Nationwide Salmonella Outbreak Linked to August Egg Company’s Organic Eggs

A multistate Salmonella outbreak has been linked to organic brown cage-free eggs produced by August Egg Company of Hilmar, California. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 79 people across seven states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis. The illnesses have been severe, with health officials reporting that 21 people have been hospitalized—more than a quarter of those who fell ill.

In response to the growing outbreak, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of several products from August Egg Company. The recall includes organic brown cage-free eggs and other chicken egg varieties with sell-by dates from March 4, 2025, through June 4, 2025. These contaminated eggs were sold at major retailers in California and Nevada, including:

  • Save Mart
  • FoodMaxx
  • Lucky
  • Smart & Final
  • Safeway
  • Raleys
  • Food 4 Less
  • Ralphs
  • Some Wal-Mart locations

If you purchased organic eggs from these or other stores, please check your cartons immediately. Do not eat, sell, or serve recalled eggs. Health officials advise you to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.

Ron Simon & Associates Files First August Egg Lawsuit

The national food poisoning law firm of Ron Simon & Associates, along with Gomez Trial Attorneys, has filed the first August Egg Company Lawsuit in San Diego County, California. The lawsuit was filed for Carrie Fairchild, who became seriously ill after eating the company’s organic, cage-free eggs purchased from a Safeway store.

Within a day of consuming the eggs, Ms. Fairchild began suffering from severe symptoms of salmonellosis, including diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, and chills. Her illness was so serious that she required hospitalization and continues to recover from the effects of the Salmonella infection. A copy of the lawsuit is available upon request.

“Companies that sell food to the public have a fundamental responsibility to ensure their products are safe to eat,” said food poisoning lawyer Ron Simon. “When they fail, and people like Ms. Fairchild get hurt, they must be held accountable. We are committed to getting justice for every single person affected by this preventable outbreak.”

Do I Have a Salmonella Infection? Know the Symptoms

A Salmonella infection, called salmonellosis, can be a very unpleasant and sometimes dangerous illness. Symptoms typically appear 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated product. While most people recover within a week, some, especially young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, can develop severe complications requiring hospitalization.

Be on the lookout for these common symptoms:

  • Diarrhea (which can be bloody)
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headaches

If you are experiencing these symptoms after eating eggs, it’s important to see a doctor right away to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. A confirmed diagnosis is also critical evidence if you decide to pursue a legal claim.
